Alcorcón is situated in the metropolitan area of Madrid. It is a rapidly growing area with a population of 165,000 people and area size of 33 square kilometers. The project was originally initiated by the city counsel to provide a city wide wireless network to aid the police force in traffic management and video surveillance. One of the main objectives was to prevent urban vandalism, specifically in the growing number of schools in the city.
The overall solution involved integration of products from a number of vendors: my company, ioimage, for video analytics, Alvarion providing the wireless backbone and Genetec as the command center console and storage. Hundreds of cameras were installed at this round, out of which approximately 30% are PTZ dome cameras and the rest are stationary.
The dome cameras are used with ioimage's autonomous PTZ analytics to provide automatic tracking of people and vehicles, while the stationary cameras are configured and scheduled for a myriad of applications throughout the day, including intrusion detection, unattended objects, loitering, and traffic violations (illegal parking, etc).
After several months of operation the system had considerably increased detection rates while reducing manpower required to constantly monitor video screens, eventually winning the title "The Virtual Police of Alcorcón"
